When Should I Seek Help from a Professional?

There has long been stigma in our society about acknowledging and seeking help for psychiatric illnesses. Many of us suffer from common conditions such as anxiety, depression, or substance abuse, yet do not seek help. This may be because of this stigma, or because we feel marginalized and alone by acknowledging these concerns within ourselves, or because we assume others are worse off and therefore more in need of treatment than we are. Whatever the reason, the result is continued suffering when there is help available.

In this talk, Dr. Somers will review common psychiatric conditions, what their most typical symptoms are, and what the signs are that you or your loved one may benefit from working with a mental health professional. If time allows, Dr. Somers will discuss typical treatment options for these illnesses, and what to expect in your first meeting with a psychiatrist, psychotherapist, or other behavioral health specialist.
