Maura C. McCaffrey, President and Chief Executive Officer
Maura leads Health New England in its mission to improve the health and lives of the people in its communities. A wholly-owned subsidiary of Baystate Health, Health New England offers a range of health care plans in the commercial, Medicaid and Medicare markets. Maura is responsible for strategic and operational leadership of the non-profit health plan and its almost 200,000 members.
Prior to becoming CEO in April 2014, Maura served as Chief Operating Officer with responsibility for oversight of sales, business development and operations. In this role, she led Health New England in achieving its operating goals and expanding all lines of business.
She joined Health New England in 2002 as a clinical pharmacist, and took on positions of increased responsibility as Director and then Vice President of Pharmacy and Service Operations. In 2006, she was appointed Vice President of Marketing, Business Development and Medicare, responsible for business-development initiatives, such as launching the Medicare and Medicaid product lines. Prior to joining Health New England, she held various roles at the top pharmaceutical manufacturer, Eli Lilly.
Maura sits on several boards, including the Board of Directors for the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, the national Health Plan Alliance, Western New England University, Economic Development Council and the Pioneer Valley Accountable Care. She is a member of the Baystate Health President’s Cabinet, Associated Health Insurance Plans, the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacists, and participates with Link to Libraries. Maura was recognized in Bay Path University’s Women Business Leaders Hall of Fame in 2015 and was named 2014 Business Woman of the Year by the Western Massachusetts Women’s Magazine.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Rhode Island, where she was a recipient of the Rho Chi National Honor Society Award, and an MBA with a major in health care administration from Anna Maria College. She has participated in Executive Education programs at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and Babson College in Massachusetts, where she has also served as a mentor in the Babson Executive Women’s Leadership MBA program.
