Meet Health New England’s executive leadership team who works hard to fulfill our mission of improving the health and lives of the people in our communities.

Jody Gross, Interim President and CEO


As Interim President and CEO, Jody leads Health New England in its mission to improve the health and lives of the people in its communities. A wholly-owned subsidiary of Baystate Health, Health New England offers a range of health care plans in the commercial, Medicaid and Medicare markets. Jody is responsible for strategic and operational leadership of the non-profit health plan and its members.

Jody also serves as Vice President of Operations and Government Programs with overall responsibility for Member Services, Enrollment, Claims, Government Program Operations and Government Programs Sales. Prior to this position, he served as Vice President of Sales, where he developed and executed the sales and retention strategy for the commercial, Medicare and Medicaid lines of business.

Jody joined the company in 2001 and has served in various management positions in finance and business development. From tracking cost-saving initiatives to creating and monitoring an extensive annual medical budget, he gained a perspective on all functional areas within Health New England.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Bryant College and an MBA from the University of Connecticut. He has participated in the Tuck Executive Education Program at Dartmouth College in leadership and strategy, graduated from the Massachusetts Health Leadership College and has obtained his Lominger ® certification in interviewing and professional development. He also holds Health Insurance Producers licenses in both Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Ashley Allen, Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Business Development


Ashley’s responsibilities include leading Health New England’s commercial product development, marketing and sales, community benefits, and health and wellness programs.

Prior to joining the company in 2016, Ashley was with FirstCare Health Plans in Austin, Texas, where she was Vice President of Marketing and Sales. Her career also includes more than 20 years with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, where she served in various leadership roles in sales, marketing, strategy and business planning. Her most recent position there was Senior Director of Sales and Distribution Strategy.

Ashley is committed to the community and serves on a number of boards within industry associations and non-profit organizations, including as a board member of the United Way of Pioneer Valley. She also recently served on several committees for America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).

Ashley holds a Master of Health Administration, an MBA with a focus in marketing, and a Bachelor of Science in advertising from the University of Florida, as well as a Certificate of Strategy Development and Implementation from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Ken Bernard, Vice President of Information Technology


Ken’s responsibilities include aligning Health New England’s Information Technology portfolio with the company’s needs and strategy.

He joined the company in 2010 as Director of IT Applications and subsequently took on responsibility for IT Operations and Infrastructure. Ken has extensive IT experience as a consultant and in leadership positions at several Fortune 500 companies. In addition to health care experience, Ken has a background in insurance and other financial service industries.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the University of Massachusetts and an MBA from Western New England University.

Laurie Gianturco, MD, Vice President and
Chief Medical Officer


Dr. Gianturco is involved in all aspects of the organization’s medical management.

Prior to joining Health New England, she was Chair of Radiology at Baystate Medical Center and President of Radiology and Imaging Inc, the largest private radiology practice in Massachusetts. In addition, she has held other positions as Chief of Nuclear Medicine and Course Director for Nuclear Medicine and Nuclear Cardiology at Baystate Medical Center and at the VA Boston Health Care System.

Dr. Gianturco holds a bachelor’s degree, with honors, from Bryn Mawr College, and a medical degree from the University of North Carolina. She completed her internship in internal medicine at Washington Hospital Center, and her residency in diagnostic radiology at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C,. and Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. She completed fellowships in interventional radiology at Beth Israel Hospital and body imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She is board-certified in radiology and nuclear medicine. She has twice been selected as one of the “Best Doctors in America.”

Susan O’Connor, Esq., Vice President and General Counsel


Sue’s responsibilities include leading all aspects of corporate and strategic legal initiatives, while overseeing both in-house and outside counsel.

Sue joined Health New England in 2008, and served in various roles including Assistant General Counsel and Director of Legal Services, and more recently as Director of Government Programs, where she was responsible for leading the growth of Health New England’s Medicare and Medicaid lines of business and overseeing operations related to government programs. Prior to joining Health New England, she was Director of Legal Affairs and Compliance for the Pioneer Health Group, and worked in private practice and with the City of Springfield Law Department. Prior to her career in law, Sue worked as a social worker for Families in Crisis, Inc., and the Connecticut Association for Human Services.

Sue received her Juris Doctor degree from Western New England University School of Law, earned a Master of Social Work from the University of Connecticut and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Clark University. She is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association and the American Health Lawyers Association, and is a Board member of the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans.

Steven J. Sigal, CPA, Vice President & Chief Financial Officer


Steve is responsible for leading Health New England’s financial strategy, accounting and financial reporting, ensuring our ability to provide cost-effective health care coverage while maintaining high-quality member care.

Before joining Health New England in 2017, Steve was Chief Financial Officer at Access Health CT in Hartford, Connecticut. In this role, he was part of the management team to build Connecticut’s public exchange contemplated in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Launched in 2013, the exchange quickly became one of the nation’s leading state-based marketplaces. His career also includes more than 17 years at Aetna Inc. where he served in various leadership roles in financial management, including head of finance transformation, vice president and director of internal audit, chief financial officer for consumer markets, Northeast region financial officer and chief financial officer of specialty health.

Steve holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Georgetown University. He also graduated from the advanced management program at The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, Durham, NC.
